[01] OVERVIEW
WHAT IS A SLAB LEAK?
A slab leak is a break in one of the water lines running underneath your home's concrete foundation. Because the pipe is buried in or below the slab, the water has nowhere to go but into the concrete, the soil, and eventually up through your flooring — which is why slab leaks cause so much damage before anyone notices them.
They happen for a few common reasons. Copper lines can corrode from soil chemistry or wear thin where they rub against concrete. Shifting soil puts pressure on rigid pipe until it cracks. Poor installation from the original build can leave a line under stress for decades before it finally gives. Hot water lines fail more often than cold ones, which is why a warm spot on the floor is such a telling symptom.
At Plumbers That Care, we never open a floor to go looking. We use acoustic listening equipment and thermal imaging to pinpoint the leak's exact location first, then choose the repair method that disturbs your home the least — a spot repair through a small access point, or rerouting the line entirely when the pipe run is too compromised to patch.
A slab leak doesn't stay a plumbing problem for long. Left alone, escaping water erodes the soil supporting your foundation and can lead to cracking, settling, and structural repairs far more expensive than the leak itself.
[02] WARNING SIGNS
SIGNS YOU HAVE A SLAB LEAK
Slab leaks hide well, but they leave clues. Any of these deserve a professional look.
A warm spot on your floor
A hot water line leaking under the slab heats the concrete above it.
The sound of running water with taps off
Water you can hear but not see is escaping somewhere hidden.
An unexplained spike in your water bill
A slab leak runs constantly, and the meter keeps counting.
Damp or buckling flooring
Moisture pushing up through the slab warps wood and lifts tile.
Cracks in walls or flooring
Soil erosion under the foundation causes the structure to shift.
A musty smell with no visible source
Moisture trapped under flooring breeds mold you can't see.
Low water pressure
Water escaping before it reaches your fixtures reduces flow.
Your water meter moves with everything off
The clearest test there is — if it spins, water is escaping.
Think you might have one? Shut off every fixture and check your water meter. If it's still moving, call us — we'll locate the leak before anything gets opened up.

[07] FAQ
SLAB LEAK QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
-
We use acoustic listening devices that hear water escaping under pressure, combined with thermal imaging that reveals temperature differences from hot water lines. Together they narrow the location to within inches before anything is opened.
-
Usually far less than people expect. Once we've pinpointed the leak, a spot repair often needs only a small access opening. If the pipe run is badly deteriorated, rerouting the line avoids the slab entirely.
-
A spot repair fixes the break where it is — best when the rest of the pipe is sound. Rerouting abandons the failing section and runs a new line through walls or the attic. Rerouting costs more upfront but prevents repeat leaks in an aging line.
-
Policies vary. Many cover the resulting damage — the flooring, drywall, and contents — while excluding the cost of accessing and repairing the pipe itself. We document everything thoroughly so you can make the strongest possible claim.
-
Urgent. Water escaping under a foundation erodes the soil that supports it, and that leads to settling and structural cracks. What starts as a plumbing repair becomes a foundation repair if it's left long enough.
-
You can shut off the main to stop the damage temporarily, but that leaves you without water in the home. It's a stopgap for a few hours, not a solution for days.
-
Hot water lines expand and contract with every use, and that constant movement wears the pipe where it contacts concrete. The heat also accelerates corrosion. That's why a warm floor spot is one of the most reliable slab leak symptoms.
